The title of this book should have been landscaping down south. It has more Information on landscaping than gardening. From the description that I read before the purchase I expected a book on growing vegetables down south. In the section on growing tomatoes it says that follow my advise and you will grow great tomatoes but, the instructions did not follow.Product details

Organic Gardening Down South by Nellie Neal is written specifically for people who want to grow organically and live in the South -- or, as Neal says, where the ground doesn't freeze and the bugs never die!
If you can grow organically in the Deep South, you can grow anywhere, as Neal outlines.
People who live in the Northeast and Midwest don't have to contend with T-shirt weather and mosquitoes on New Year's Day. People out West certainly have sunny weather, but not routine simultaneous triple digits in heat AND humidity! Tropical and semi-tropical weather patterns -- especially, as she notes, compounded by climate change -- pose unique challenges to the Southern organic gardener that aren't encountered in other areas of the country.
Her book covers the broad spectrum, from shrubs, bushes, flowers, trees and food crops. It details tools, tips and -- as a last resort -- chemicals.
Newcomers to organic gardening may be surprised, but there are -- literally -- tons of natural, nonsynthetic compounds that can be used to control pests (some quite poisonous!). So, when she mentions Neem or Pyrethum, Bt or insecticidal soaps, as a last resort, she is not straying from organics. These items are listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) under dozens of brand names as approved by the National Organic Program for certified organic growing.
Neal, who is popularly called The Garden Mama, is an authentic gardening expert of longstanding and a true organic pioneer -- some 50 years, as she admits. She hosts a local radio show on gardening, writes popular newspaper and magazine columns, and lives in Jackson, Miss. (Her website [...])
Her book gives solid, practical advice for anyone wanting to grow organic, but for uniquely Southern tried and true expertise, especially for the new grower or regional newcomer, Organic Gardening Down South is the book to buy.
found this to be more of an overview than a specific book about gardeing in the south and only a small part about organic gardening.
I had high hopes for this book; I am desperately searching for a book on organic gardening that will help me with the insect problems specific to the Mid-South. Unfortunately, this book cannot help with organic gardening because it offers the standard insecticides and chemicals as solutions to insect pest problems. Very few organic methods are even mentioned in this book, and of those mentioned, they are only no-brainer suggestions like using compost. I have requested a refund. In the meantime, look elsewhere and let me know by replying to this post if you know of or find a book on real organic gardening in the South!
